At first, choosing Palermo was a purely rational decision. There was a direct flight from Nuremberg, the city is by the sea, and it is warm. And Palermo is large enough to offer things to do even when you are on your own.

So I decided to go for a week and see whether I liked it. If I remember correctly, it took just three days for me to think: this city could be a place to have an apartment. A permanent base I could keep coming back to.

Palermo is lively and sociable. There are beautiful buildings, and right beside them are corners where it feels as though time has stood still since the Second World War. These contrasts are as much a part of my first impression of the city as the remarkable openness of its people.

After a week, one thing was clear to me: Palermo could be the place where I feel at home.
